Ridge to Reef bioreactor garden has been approved by the Hawaii Department of Health for use as a viable solution to meet the need to upgrade cesspools in Hawaii. For background, Hawaii's cesspools conversion law, act 125 was passed in 2017. The law prohibits the building of any new cesspools and requires all existing cesspools to be converted to septic systems or connected to sewer by 2050 to protect public health and the environment. However, septic systems provide minimal treatment and the requirement for further treatment is anticipated. September 2025.
